Feel Good Friday

Thank God it’s Friday and its Feel Good Friday on Top Morning with Tosyn Bucknor. After a work-full week and stressful days, you aint got no choice but to feel good on a Friday and that is exactly what Double 09 is determined to do today; make you feel good on a Feel Good Friday as the weekend begins. It is also an opportunity to give a loud shout-out to the people that mean something, nothing, anything and everything to you.
There was a lot of excitement in the air today as Tosyn couldn’t help but to share the fun even as she read the traffic updates and received calls. Iyana-Ipaja, Shomolu, Ajangbadi, Ketu, Maza-Maza, Ojo, Ikeja, Third mainland bridge, Akowonjo, Egbeda, Yaba and Agege were not free this morning. Conversely, Allen Avenue, Ikorodu, ajegunle, Maryland, Sagamu, Abule Egba, and Mangoro were quite free this morning. The weather was chilly in all these places, making people want to stay in bed and rest some more for the fear of rain.
In the Yarn-free Zone today, we had some music from Dido, Tracy Chapman and Taylor. Next, Tosyn gave some information about the Verve debit card powered by Interswitch. The card is so secure and efficient that one needn’t worry about fraud, and it is accepted in all payment channels in Nigeria and even abroad. It guards your money by ensuring that you receive a text message each time a withdrawal is being made so that one can quickly abort the transaction in cases involving fraud. It also provides an Identity Guard which is a one-time pin code that is generated each time the card is being used. As if this is not enough, it has a professional team that manages and investigates issues. As an added advantage is the fact that it rewards loyal patronage by giving them some freebies. It is available in all banks nationwide.
Aramide came in on Top 9 Moments today with some info about the on-going investigation over MJ’s paternity of Omer Bhatti, a 25-year old dancer who claimed to be the issue from MJ’s secret love affair. It was reported that he had been living with his parents in Neverland before now. Another story on MJ revealed that a custody deal has been reached for his children that would see the biological children of the two eldest earn parental rights and their grandmother retain permanent custody of all three children. She will obtain visitation rights but no money beyond the spousal agreement already in place. Some security experts have uncovered flaws in apple Inc’s {AAPLO} iPhone that they say hackers can exploit to take control of the popular device, using the tactic for identity theft and other crimes. In Nigeria, the ASUU chairman at the lagoe State University {LASU} Ojo, Lagos, Kabir akinyemi has dispelled reports that the institution might commence with its semester exams on Monday. The leader of a radical Islamic sect in northern Nigeria has been killed in police detention hours after being captured by the security forces on Thursday.
With so much information on Top 9 Moments, Aramide had to give a quote to water it down and the quote for today is: ‘Where there is a will… there are 500 Williams’. Ha ha
After this, it was just loads of shout-outs to usher us into the weekend and Tosyn said her good bye at a few minutes to 11.
Much love,
Ruthina Atinuke.

Thursday Morning

Could there be a better way to start your day on a Thursday without joining Area Mama on Top Morning. The unique thing about every Thursday on Top Morning is that we get greet our fellow Nigerians in our dialect and give a proverb in our dialect as well.
The traffic updates that came in today revealed that there was an easy flow of traffic in places like: Lekki, Ogijo, Lagos Island, Abule Egba, Agege, Berger, Akute and Alakuko; and the weather was chilly. While the traffic in Yaba, Agric, alapere, Isheri, Egbeda, Ikorodu, Agiliti, Marina, Ota, and Ojo barracks was quite heavy. The weather was a bit chilly in these areas as well.
After the Area Show, we entered the Yarn-Free Zone. This morning, as always, it was with a difference. We had it the Classic Fairytale way. There were songs from Beauty and the Beast; and the little Mermaid. Could there have been a better way to dig it on a Thursday morning? When we left the Zone, Tosyn gave some information about Cobratnet’s U-go. It is a facility that provides fast internet access with other added benefits.
For Top 9 Moments today, Aramide brought some news about a Sudanese woman who was facing 40 lashes for wearing trousers in public. She was charged with immodest dressing and this is not uncommon in Sudan but she decided to stand up to contest the law. She even wore the same green slacks that got her arrested when she went to the court. A 7-year old boy in Utah took his father’s car and went for a joyride to avoid Sunday trip to Church with his parents. Microsoft Corp and Yahoo Inc have launched a 10-year Web search deal to challenge market leader Google but stopped short of combining other advertising businesses. On the sport scene, Michael Phelps has broken another record after being beaten by Paul Biedermann in the 200-metre butterfly. This time, his new record is even more amazing than his gold medal-winning time of 1:52:03 at the Beijing Olympics. Maria Sharapova has also been reported to have reached the third round of the Bank of the West Classic with a 6-1-6-2 win over Nadia Petrova in California.
After the Top 9 Moments, it was just proverbs, proverbs and more hilarious proverbs in different languages. As much as she would have loved to stay back and have fun, she just had to sign out at 10:56 am.
Much love,
Ruthina Atinuke.

Celeb Wednesday

Celebrity Wednesday with Tosyn Bucknor on Top Morning is the day of the week when listeners get the opportunity to make someone- anyone- a celebrity by simply calling in on the show or sending a text and naming an unpopular person who deserves to be a celebrity for that day. That way, everyone who has done something significant actually gets the recognition they deserve. Besides, a popular celebrity also comes in later on the show, and the listeners get the opportunity to question them and get to know them better. These are some of the things that make celebrity Wednesday different from any other day of the week.
But before all of these, there was the traffic and weather updates to help keep abreast of the happenings in our ‘Area’. The update from Mangoro, Berger, Akute, Alakuko, Oshodi, Ketu, Ikeja, Gbagada, Ogba, and Lekki showed that traffic wasn’t quite heavy in those areas. The update from Ikorodu, Ijebu-Ode, Baracks, Ijokoro, Palm grove, Agiliti, Marina, Ota, and Abule Egba revealed that navigating around these areas wasn’t quite easy this morning. In most places, the weather was quite chilly this morning.
The Yarn-Free Zone for today was a Rod Stewart, Bon Jon Jovi and Bryant Adams affair. The first set of celebrities for today was the 4 contestants from MTN’s Project Fame. They are the 4 not-so-lucky contestants, who based on their poor performance at the gala night, are on probation presently. They are: Tari, Mike, Dave and Jennifer. Besides displaying their talents by singing, they individually pleaded for peoples’ vote to keep them in the competition as only 3 of them will be allowed to get back in the competition eventually.
Aramide also came in with Top 9 Moments, bringing news about President Yar Adua who said that the issue between the Federal govt and Lagos State has everything to do with adhering to the constitution, which must not be violated. The British govt has also told civil servants to go forth and tweet. Interesting huh? An Australian woman was reported to have been rescued after spending a week being trapped between her toilet and bathroom door. Finally, Michel Jackson’s fans have launched a campaigned calling for the superstar to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
As though the bundles of talent from Project Fame were not enough, Lara George also came in to talk about her latest album and a bit about herself. There were lots of compliments about her hit track- ‘Run with you’. Some people questioned her decision to make it in collaboration with Lord of Ajasa while some others wanted to know if she thought she got a fair deal from the West African idols show in which she participated. Another set of people feel that she and other members of the now dissolved ‘Kush’ owe their fans lots of apologies for dissolving the group at an early stage. After answering these questions, she read the weather report and said her bye-word to her fans.

Town hall Tuesday

Every Tuesday on Top Morning with Tosyn bucknor is: ‘Townhall Tuesday’. It is so called because it is another time to let people lay their complaints about the things that are not right in their areas. More so, on every Townhall Tuesday, there’s an opportunity to discuss a topic that is germane to people and their environments during the Public Forum.
Other than these, the show followed the same pattern as usual, with people calling in to give traffic updates and the weather reports about their areas. The update from Palmgrove, Sango, yaba, Alagbado, and Ikeja revealed that the traffic was quite free whereas the traffic at Agbado-ijaiye, Meiran, Ojo Baracks, Iju, third mainland bridge, Cement, Mile 2 and Ikorodu revealed that the traffic was bumper-to-bumper. The weather wasn’t bad either.
The Yarn-Free Zone for today was an absolute Naija affair as Ibiyemi, Lami and Omolara entertained us with their interesting music. A few minutes later, it was time to open the Public Forum. The topic that was up for discussion today was giving to beggars on the streetsas opposed to giving to corporate charity homes. There were various responses. Some people were of the opinion that street begging is an act that shouldn’t be encouraged as it would lead to slothfulness on the part of the beggars and the people who really need the help can be found in organized settings. Some other people opined that giving is giving and it should be done anywhere whenever it is possible for one to give as doing so is simply obeying God.
On Top 9 Moments today, Aramide told us about the Federal Govt’s plan to apportion 36 billion naira to improve transportation in Nigeria. Next, she said that the clash in the North has claimed the lives of 5 policemen and 60 Talibans, and a police station was burned as well. There was also a warning to drivers about sending text messages while driving as it increases the rate of road accidents. The president of France was also reported to have collapsed while jogging. The collapse was adduced to heat and stress. From the entertainment scene, Mariah Carey confessed in her latest album; Memoirs of an imperfect angel; that her marriage to Nick Cannon has brought her fulfilment.
The How-To show came up after Top 9 Moments. The show is poised to give several impracticable tips that point out the things that shouldn’t be done in order to maintain healthy relationships with others. Today, Miss Money Bags gave tips on how to use your money to make enemies- enjoy your money alone without including your friends even when you go out together; lend money to your friends and keep asking them to pay you back; always make your friends envy you by making them envy you... There were various contributions from the listeners as well. Following any of these suggestions is one sure way to create enmity with your money if that is your intent.
It was on this note that Tosyn Bucknor signed out at 10:56 am.

Energetic Monday

It is energetic Monday once again with Tosyn Bucknor. It is the program that sets the pace for a week-long Top of the Morning experience with Tosyn Bucknor. After a long weekend, there couldn’t have been a better way to start a new week than to do it the ‘Area’ way. The program started at 6:00 am and Area Mama took the floor at 6:45 am, receiving reports from people about their areas till 7:45am.
People from places like Marina, Agege, Ojota, Ikeja, and far away in Ile-Ife did not have it good with the traffic this morning. More so, there was huge load of complain about the traffic at Cement this morning. Conversely, people from Ogba, Ojodu Berger, Ado-Ekiti, Ikorodu and Maryland to say they enjoyed a smooth ride from around various destinations this morning. The weather reports that came in were not too bad for a Monday morning.
At 8:00am, it was time to enter the Yarn-Free Zone. This is the corner the music does all the talking. For today, it wasn’t Classic Naija songs. Rather, it was three interesting songs from Lil Mama, Hudson and Maria Carey. It was worthwhile. At 8:30, it was time to travel down memory lane. The idea this morning was to find out the pet that people owned back in the days and what the relationship was like. It was obviously different strokes for different folks as people called in to say that they had pets like dogs, cats, snail, ram, and ducks. Incredible, isn’t it?
At 9:00am, it was time for Top 9 Moments with Aramide. She came in with amazing stories today. Among these is Debbie Rowe’s {M.J.’s wife} confession that her reason for marrying M.J. was in order to avoid the taboo of having children outside wedlock. Next was the interesting bit of information about Ne-yo, the popular musician who cried after he lost his voice on the stage while he was performing for a large audience. Another interesting story was that of 2 Nigerian writers who won at the Multi-Choice African Journalist of the Year Award.
After the Top 9 Moments, Tosyn read out the winners of the 2009 edition of Emmy Awards. Not too long thereafter, it was time to call it quits on the program for the day.

Shout out Friday

Thank God it’s Friday on Top Morning with Tosyn Bucknor, the Area Mama herself. As usual, the show started on a musical note, with the Area Mama saying good morning with loads of songs. At exactly 6:30am, she said ‘good morning’ the ‘top morning’ way with her resounding A-r-e-a. Then of course, it was time to get the weather and traffic updates from different parts of the country.
People from areas like Agege, Ogba, Ishaga, Ikeja, Berger and Ilupeju called in early to say that they enjoyed a hitch-free traffic in those areas. Truly, we thank the Lord for their trips. People who really did not have it so good with the traffic this morning both called and sent in texts to express how not-so-good they’re having it with the traffic on their end. Such people include: the prestigious people from Ikorodu, the royal people from V.I., the esteemed people from Shasha, Dopemu and of course the illustrious people from Ojo Baracks. We hope the traffic mania takes it easy on these people this weekend. The weather was reported to have been good in many areas but it seemed that the people who did not have it so good on their end were actually cool with it.
At 8am, it was time to step into the Yarn-Free Zone. This is the time when no one; including Double 09 herself; doesn’t get to say anything. The musicians just get to do their thing. The first musician to enter the zone today sang Osondi Owendi, before Banky W took over with Strong Thing.
There was more music until it was 9:00 am, time for Top 9 Moments with Aramide. Unfortunately, Aramide’s voice wasn’t so good this morning so Tosyn saved the day and brought the news to us. In the news today was a story about Debbie Rowe, M.J’s ex-wife. She sued one Miss White on Thursday at the Los Angeles Court for defamation and invasion of privacy. There was still more news about M.J. this time, it was about the advert he did for Pepsi in 1984 in which he incurred some injuries from fire burns. The P.R.O. of the Pepsi Corporation responded well to this upheaval. The bit of information that got people texting was the one that involved Christian Ronaldo’s comment about Michael Owen inheriting the Man-U No 7 jersey from him. One would wonder if indeed Ronaldo was really beefing or just bluffing.
The tradition for Fridays on Top Morning is to let people give a shout-out to their loved and their unloved ones. So today, Tosyn set the ball rolling with the lines open for people to call and send text to give shout-outs to the people that mean something and everything to them. People also shared the plans they have for the weekend today.
At a few minutes to 11, Tosyn signed out and wished everyone a blissful weekend with an original Naija song.

Monday, July 27, 2009

It is a Monday morning, time to go on a date with Tosyn Bucknor on Top Morning. This morning, the program went the Energetic way, meaning that Area Mama took it on a spirited note. You’ll agree with me that she has a way of taking us to the peak. This morning, she started by giving a brief on how her weekend unfolded. After which, following the usual routine, the program kicks off with ‘Area’, allowing people to call in and give an update of the weather and traffic reports in their areas.

The traffic in Ilisan, Badagry, Sagamu, Akute, Alagbado, Iju, Coker and Ikeja wasn’t too bad for a Monday morning. On the other hand, the traffic at Ikorodu, Ojodu, Alagbole, Sabo, Iyana-Ipaja, Third Mainland Bridge, Cement and Mile 12 wasn’t quite encouraging. The reports about the traffic wasn’t that bad either.

She also fed us some information about the newly-introduced Verve Interswitch card. The interswitch card is safe, fast and efficient. It ensures safety by giving an sms alert each time a withdrawal is being made. It also has a Fraud Alert Security System and Fraud Insurance. It has a professional team that investigates and manages issues apart from rewarding constant customers by enabling them to buy goods free of charge. It is available in banks.

The Yarn-Free Zone wasn’t a naija music affair. Rather, it was about songs like: Paranoid by Kanye West; Knocks you down by Keri Hilson, featuring Kanye West and Ne-yo; the last song came from Ne-yo with Mad.

Thereafter, it was time to travel down memory lane but this time, we travelled by into the future. The topic that was up for discussion today is: ‘what are the things that were intricate aspects of your life that you think your grandchild or next generation would never believe existed?’ there were various hilarious responses that came in. Some people said that some of their siblings don’t believe that there was ever a time when television came only in black and white and people had to wait till 4pm before they could watch T.V; that in Abeokuta, they used to announce before there will be an interruption in power supply; used stamped love letters to woo a girl instead of twitting with the girl.

Some even said that they don’t think their grandchildren will ever believe that at a point before, Policemen used to collect bribes on the road; that people used to jump off commercial buses after shouting: ‘owa o’; taking dark slates and chalks to school instead of books and electronic gadgets; using rotary dial phones before the advent of GSM phones; a time when ‘ice water’ were the popular thing, not sachet water or the bottled ones that have now become popular; and the use of ‘pako’- traditional tree branches instead of the normal toothbrushes for brushing.

Top 9 Moments with Aramide came up with some news about Barak Obama. It was said that he falsified the information in his birth certificate and that he really isn’t an American citizen like he claimed. There was also some news about Coach Jose Mourinho of Inter Milan, stating that he is satisfied with the balance of his squad. This he said, referring to the swap between Samuel Eto’o and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It was also said that a sum of 5.5 million dollars was recovered for MJ’s estate from one of his former financial advisers.

As part of the package for ‘Energetic Monday’, there was a question about who should bear the responsibility for the kind of music that is played by the media. Is the producers, artistes, the media or the listeners? There were several responses with people pointing accusing fingers at the media; some others cast aspersions on the listeners. Yet, some others blamed the producers and the artistes.

It was on this note that the show ended today.
